A good and spacious pellet storage is essential for your pellet system to function smoothly and efficiently. The size of the storage you need depends on the size of the property you need to heat. For an average-sized house, 5-6 m² is usually sufficient for storing pellets and pellet containers. For larger properties, the need is naturally different. At Ulma, we offer ready-made storage solutions, as well as accessories for all types of pellet storage – from small boiler rooms to large industrial-scale bulk storage.
Pellets should be stored dry and handled with care. It's important that the humidity in your storage is not too high, as wet pellets provide lower heating value and increased emissions during combustion. If you are building a standalone pellet storage unit outdoors, you should ensure that the building keeps rain and moisture out. At the same time, there needs to be some airflow to prevent the formation of carbon monoxide.

MAFA pellet storage is a robust container for neat and functional storage of fuel pellets. They are intended for indoor use by those who handle their fuel pellets loose or in bags. We offer MAFA storage in the following sizes: 127 liters, 300 liters, and 730 liters.
A major advantage of pellets compared to, for example, firewood is that the fuel feeding is handled automatically using a feed screw, dosing screw, or feed chute. Your pellet system largely takes care of itself – as long as the supply of pellets is constant. This technology is not only convenient but also practical, as it provides a consistent supply of fuel, allowing your burner or boiler to deliver maximum heat output.
However, watch out for so-called arching, which can occur when your pellets support each other instead of falling towards the bottom of the container. Another common problem is that sawdust in the feed screw can stop the feeding (though the risk of this is small as long as you use high-quality pellets).
If you don't want to buy pellets on pallets, you have the option to buy pellets in bulk. In this case, the fuel pellets are delivered by a truck that blows the pellets into your storage room.
The alternative to going and buying pellets on a pallet is to order them in bulk based on weight. Typically, the delivery is made by a truck that simply blows the pellets into your storage where you keep them. The advantage is twofold: firstly, it allows you to order more pellets that last longer. Additionally, deliveries are offered via truck, so you don't have to go and purchase pellets yourself.
Most bulk pellet suppliers have a minimum limit of 3 tons per delivery. Therefore, it is important to build a pellet storage that can accommodate this volume, plus a little more. Also, make sure to place the storage in a location that is easy for the pellet truck to reach.
For this type of storage solution, there are really two options. One is to build your own pellet storage on-site atop a stronger feeding system such as a discharge chute. Feel free to look at the product page to get an idea of what such a setup typically looks like. We recommend having this type of pellet storage indoors where the climate can be controlled to prevent moisture from getting in and damaging the pellets. The other option is to buy a MAFA pellet storage unit to use as intermediate storage.
