New energy grant for small houses 2026 – can pellet stoves be included?

The Swedish government has presented a new proposal to extend and broaden the energy efficiency grant for small houses. The proposal is particularly interesting for those considering pellet-based heating, as Boverket now states that the grant is proposed to cover the installation of a device for heating with biofuel that is power-controlled and allows continuous automatic fuel supply.

The grant is not open for applications yet

It is important to know that the new grant cannot be applied for at the moment. According to Boverket, the new rules are proposed to start applying on 17 August 2026.

However, it is proposed that it will be possible to apply for a grant for measures started from 1 January 2026. According to the government FAQ, measures started before this date will not be eligible for a grant.

How large can the grant be?

According to the proposal, the grant may cover 30 percent of the material cost for energy and power efficiency measures.

The maximum grant is proposed to be SEK 60,000 per small house. Previously paid grants under the earlier grant scheme may, however, be included in the maximum amount.

This means that the actual grant may be lower depending on the measures carried out, the cost of the material and whether a grant has previously been paid for the same house.

Who can apply for the grant?

According to Boverket, the grant is proposed to be available to people who own and permanently live in a small house.

The small house must not have a value year later than 1989. The grant is also proposed not to be available for small houses connected to a district heating network.

A difference compared with the previous scheme is that the grant is proposed to apply regardless of the current heating method of the house, with the exception of houses already connected to district heating.

Can a pellet stove be included in the grant?

Our cautious interpretation is that this should be relevant for modern pellet stoves, as they use biofuel, have automatic fuel supply and are normally power-controlled.

At the same time, we want to be clear that the final rules and practical application are not yet fully established. The county administrative boards will handle applications and make decisions in individual cases.

Which measures are proposed to be included?

According to Boverket, grants are proposed for several types of energy and power efficiency measures, including:

• installation of a water-based heat distribution system
• connection to a district heating network
• installation of ventilation with heat recovery
• installation of certain controllable heat pumps
• installation of a controllable hot water heater with integrated heat pump
• installation of a biofuel-based heating device that is power-controlled and has continuous automatic fuel supply
• building envelope measures, such as additional insulation, windproofing, supplementary glazing and replacement of windows or doors

The Swedish government mentions in its FAQ that it should be possible to apply for a grant for the new installation of a pellet boiler. Boverket’s wording is broader and refers to a device for heating with biofuel that meets the requirements for power control and automatic fuel supply.

Can you carry out the work yourself?

The Swedish government writes in its FAQ that there is no obstacle in itself to receiving a grant for material costs if you carry out the work yourself.

This may be interesting for many practical homeowners. At the same time, it is important that the installation of a stove, flue and heating equipment is carried out correctly and in accordance with applicable rules.

Always check with your municipality what applies when installing a pellet stove, chimney or flue. In many cases, a notification, start notice and inspection may be required before the installation may be used.

What should you save?

Since the grant is not yet open, you should save all documentation if you are planning a measure that may become eligible for a grant.

Examples of documentation that may be useful to save:

• quotation
• order confirmation
• receipts and invoices
• product sheets
• technical documentation
• installation instructions
• any documents from the municipality, chimney sweep or inspection body

Important before you order

Since the rules have not yet been finally decided, you should be careful about basing the investment solely on the grant.

Our advice is:

• follow updates from Boverket and the Swedish government
• save all documentation relating to the product and installation
• check with your municipality what applies when installing a stove or flue
• make sure that the product has automatic fuel supply and power control
• wait for final information about the application process before counting on receiving a grant
